Generational Medical Alert Service Dog Teams
So what does this refer to? TADSAW is most unique in that it is a Participant Trained Service Dog (PTSD) program – meaning the client is totally involved the training of their Medical Alert Service Dog for their diagnosed medical condition, where a Service Dog would be an appropriate and beneficial addition to improve the client’s quality of life. This is the reason TADSAW chose this training model in order for the client to learn how to train their initial Medical Alert Service Dog from start to finish – and successfully complete the TADSAW Public Access Temperament Test (PATT) under the supervision and guidance of the TADSAW Service Dog Trainer. And in time, the client would have the knowledge and skill to replace their Medical Alert Service Dog.
The ‘Special Sauce” for success is simple and no Secret. It’s the HUMAN Factor! We counted on ‘high school’ boys and girls to join the Military and in an 8 to 16+ week training program, taught them an occupation to protect and defend Our Nation from all enemies, which has lasted a lifetime. Now they are held captive by the horrific memories of war, and it is diagnosed and treated as a mental health issue NOT as an occupational hazard, which it should be. With the client involved in the role as assistant trainer, throughout the training of their Participant Trained Service Dog (PTSD) for approximately 20 to 25 weeks, the client attains the skills required to train their initial Service Dog and future replacement Service Dogs. What else can rebuild self-confidence, self-trust, and self-esteem in a person except for hard work?
TADSAW’s PTSD program works, as 30 Veterans have successfully self-trained their 2nd Service Dog (GEN-II – with minimal Trainer contact!), successfully completing the TADSAW PATT – to continue the mission their original TADSAW Service Dog started for healing, controlling the narrative and not being held hostage by the demons of their medical conditions. Also TADSAW has 2 Teams where clients have self-trained their 3rd Service Dog Team (GEN-III) and successfully completed the TADSAW PATT AGAIN!
